In this undated scene ex-WD class 8F 2-8-0 no. 90039 rests on Dunfermline shed among snow-ploughs and a pile
of fire bricks. Designed by R.A. Riddles for the Ministry of Supply these locomotives were known as "Austerities"
due to their no-frills design and construction. The East End Park main stand and one of the floodlight pylons
can be seen in the top left corner.

Looking across Dunfermline shed to the Northern Hospital we see ex-NB class J36 0-6-0 no. 65288.
Designed by M. Holmes this class was introduced in 1888. When this photograph was taken in the
mid-1960's these veteran locomotives had provided over 75 years of service! Note the bubble car
once again trying to sneak in on the act.

On August 17, 1965 we find ex-WD class 8F 2-8-0 no. 90515 facing east and positioned adjacent to the coaling stage.
The small wagons positioned besides the locomotive were used for disposal of ash shoveled from the smokebox door.

July 10, 1966 finds ex-NB class J36 0-6-0 no. 65288 inside the shed. It appears that someone has chalked the letters
"NB" on the tender and the name "Joffre" on the middle splasher. The name "Joffre" was carried on another member
of the J36 class, no. 65253. The locomotive was named in honour of Joseph Joffre, a French General who served
during World War I. Upon withdrawal in 1996, J36 classmate no. 65243 "Maude" was preserved by the
Scottish Railway Preservation Society and is now based at the Bo'ness & Kinneil Railway.
